Ged Kearney MP and a Shorten Labor Government will invest $175,000 to contribute to the development of an indoor basketball court for the Northcote Jets within the Furlan Club sporting complex in Thornbury.
The Northcote Jets, who currently field 25 teams, are experiencing growth in the number of boys and girls registering to play basketball. The addition of an indoor court facility will allow for more kids to get involved in community sport.
The announcement was made by Deputy Leader Tanya Plibersek and Ged Kearney, alongside the Northcote Jets, and a very excited bunch of young basketballers.
Ged Kearney said: “I’m thrilled the Jets will now have an indoor court they can call their own. I spent countless Saturday mornings with my kids who all played basketball – I know how local sport fosters friendships and a sense of community.”
Melanie Pinto, President of Northcote Jets Basketball Club said: “The addition of an indoor court will build cohesion and connection within the Northcote and neighbouring communities.”
Ms Kearney congratulated the Jets and the Furlan Club for their innovative thinking in refurbishing part of the Furlan Club for the basketball court. “The longevity and continued success of Furlan Club sporting facilities is again highlighted by their work with the Jets to support their indoor basketball court.”
Federal Labor knows suburban sporting facilities continue to perform a vital role in our communities. Tanya Plibersek said: “Ged is a fierce advocate for her community and a big supporter of local sport.”
Labor is committed to supporting clubs to provide facilities that ensure everyone gets a fair go at sport.
This election is a choice between Labor’s plan for stronger community facilities and bigger tax loopholes for the top end of town under the Liberals.
