Labor's Ambitious Housing Policies

Australia needs more homes. But right now, too many Australians are struggling with skyrocketing rents, housing shortages, and the dream of home ownership slipping further out of reach.

That’s why we’re making it easier to build, rent and buy – because every Australian deserves the security of a roof over their head.

Labor is ensuring this by working towards our ambitious target of building 1.2 million homes by the end of the decade. To do that however we will need more tradies getting to work, more incentives for State governments to increase their building and less red tape getting in the way.

What have we done

- Invested $10 billion in the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) to work with investors, developers, governments and industry groups to deliver 20,000 new social homes and 10,000 new affordable homes across Australia over the next 5 years including 4,000 homes for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

- Developed the National Agreement on Social Housing and Homelessness providing $9.3 billion to states and territories to combat homelessness and repair social housing.

- Provided $2 billion to states and territories under the Social Housing Accelerator to build 4,000 new social homes.

- Protected renter's rights with minimum rental standards, limits on rent increases to once a year and a requirement for genuine, reasonable grounds for eviction.

- Helped eligible home buyers buy a home sooner through the Help to Buy Scheme by providing an equity contribution of up to 40% for 40,000 low and middle-income households to purchase a home of their own and the Home Guarantee Scheme which has helped over 100,000 people into a home since May 2022.

- Doubled funding for homelessness services, with $1 billion for transitional housing for domestic violence survivors under the National Housing Infrastructure Facility.

We want more homes for people to reduce those long rental queues and make renting more affordable. It'll mean we'll have more places for first-home buyers to buy and more options for others to downsize into.

It’s not easy, but we’re working with States and Territories to build the homes that Australians deserve – and the more we build the more affordable they become.

A Future with Affordable Homes for All

Labor believes housing is a human right, not just an investment opportunity. That’s why we’re making sure:
✔️ More homes are built where people need them.
✔️ Renters get a fair go, with stronger protections.
✔️ First-home buyers get real support, not just higher prices.
