First Nations

Labor is working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for better practical outcomes for their communities.

Australia’s First Nations peoples have been fighting for justice, recognition, and equality for far too long. As a proud advocate for First Nations rights, I will always stand with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in their fight for justice, self-determination, and truth-telling.

We know that the only way we can ever get better outcomes for the first peoples of our country is to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Indigenous Australians.

Under the leadership of the Albanese Government, Labor has taken real, tangible steps to address historical injustices, ensure greater equality, and respect culture, traditions, and sovereignty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

What we have done

  • Worked with the Northern Territory government on a landmark $4 billion plan to tackle issues in remote housing.
  • $4.4 billion invested in measures to end gender-based violence.
  • Invested  $150 million to support First Nations water infrastructure and provide safe and reliable water for remote and regional Indigenous communities.
  • Supplied free tampons and pads to women and girls in remote First Nations communities to assist with the cost of living.
  • Closing the digital divide with a $20 million investment in free community Wi-Fi for First Nations communities.
  • Established new Indigenous Protected Areas and invested $355 million to expand the Indigenous Rangers Program, to double its size by the end of the decade.
  • Provided $10 million for repairs, maintenance, and upgrades to First Nations healthcare infrastructure.
  • Expanded the Connected Beginnings program to 50 sites nationwide with an $81.8 million investment to support First Nations children in thriving during early childhood.
  • Invested $50 million in funding boost to the successful Rangers Program, helping thousands of First Nation primary and secondary school children to manage Country per Traditional Owners’ objectives.

What we're committing

  • Invest $40 million for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services.
  • Allocated $44 million in funding to bolster support for First Nation families and children at risk of entering out-of-home care.

Advancing Reconciliation

Reconciliation is a chance for Australians to come together and celebrate the profound contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples make to our nation.

It is how we deal with the injustices of the past and move forward together, united.

Our Government’s commitment to reconciliation is resolute and unwavering, and we are committed to all the work already underway across governments to create better outcomes for First Nations people.

A Future Built on Respect and Justice

There is still so much work to do. I will always stand with First Nations communities in their fight for land rights, self-determination, and justice.

Labor is committed to a future built on respect, truth, and reconciliation—not division and denial. Together, we will keep pushing for the justice that First Nations people have always deserved.

Labor is determined to Close the Gap between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous, where we can build a future in which all Australians have access to the same opportunities.

Truth, Treaty, and Justice

Real change starts with listening to First Nations voices and ensuring First Nations people have control over the decisions that affect their lives. That means:
✔️ Supporting Treaty processes – because sovereignty was never ceded.
✔️ Truth-telling about our history – so we can move forward together.
✔️ Justice for Stolen Generations survivors and their families – because healing requires real action.
